"the rachel maddow show" starts right now. >> good evening, ed. thanks. and thanks to you at home for joining us this hour. it was a strange bomb shell in washington today. a little bit of news that came from an unexpected source. bob woodward got his hands on an audio recording of the top commanding general in afghanistan meeting off the record with a fox news analyst. the meeting took place last spring. it was general david petraeus who was at the time commander of all u.s. forces in the war in afghanistan. and on the tape, fox news analyst says that she was asked by her boss, by the chairman of fox news to pass along some very specific advice for general petraeus. >> if you're offered chairman, take it. if you're offered anything else, don't take it. resign in six months and run for president. okay? and i know you're not running for president, but at some point when you go to new york next, you may want to just chat with roger. i just say what i have suggested and that we've discussed is next time you go to new york you're going to

." i'm ed shultz. good evening, rachel maddow. >> thank you for staying with us. we're going to have the latest on the aftermath and the continuing news out of newtown connecticut tonight as well as some other important politics, news that is not related to what happened in newtown. the brand new snat tor elect is chris murphy. the mayor of newark, new jersey is going to be joining us in just a moment. as is the police chief from oak creek wisconsin where that mass shooting occurred this past august. that is all coming up this hour. but, in order to understand one important element of the response to newtown, in order to try to get a handle on the range of possible outcomes here, as we try to make decisions as a country as to whether we are going to change as a country because of this massacre and because of the national heartbreak it has caused, to try to get at that very big question, there is a very narrow discussion to be had about a piece of new technology. this is something called a 3d printer. anybody can become a small-scale manufacturer of anything. all you have to do is dow

will cut it again. but that's the way a democracy works. host: next call comes from rachel in foreigny, texas. independent line. hi, rachel. caller: hi. i have two questions to ask you. when these companies move overseas, can they deduct the expense it costs them to -- does it cost us expense for them to move overseas? can they use that as a deductible? and also i respect -- our representatives are 47% because they get free insurance. and i was just wondering what does that cost the taxpayers in taxes? what part of our taxes is taken for their insurance? do you know that answer? guest: i know the answer to your first question and unfortunately i don't know the answer to your second question. the answer to your first question is that, yes, businesses can deduct and are supposed to deduct all of their expenses. and that could include closing down a factory and opening up a factory overseas. it will include, you know, anything. and so democrats have actually proposed, you know, a little change to the tax law which would prevent companies from being able to do that. but it wouldn't raise a
